LOG UPDATE FOR August 2001
Friday, August 31, 2001 - 7:00am EDT (Teterboro)
Made it home just fine. Called Mom and left a message. Tiffany (cat) was glad to see me. She has been following me all over the apartment. Have been very busy trying to sort out everything. Moved my office just before I left so have been trying to unpack my desk things and take care of piles of stuff that backed up while I was out. On top of that, had a minor/major crisis this morning so I have been here since about 3:30am. Will try to get out of here around noon and head home for some sleep. Last night I spent sometime working on preparing my letter to the membership of the ICNY (Imperial Court of New York). I am running for Secretary (2001-2002) of their Board of Directors. Here is a copy of the letter. This labor day weekend I will be getting ready to pack my apartment. I am moving Friday the 14th and Monday the 17th into another apartment in the same building. Oh, joy....
Tuesday, August 28, 2001 - 6:45am CDT (St. Louis)
Well, here I am back in St. Louis. Hopefully this layover will not be anything like the last one. We had to change planes here. It's the same flight but a plane change. Hmmm. So I have 45 minutes now until it is supposed to take off. The flight here was good. A bit of bump but nothing to bad. It is neat watching the predawn from 33,000 feet. We had just a smidge of clouds below us and clear skies.
Tuesday, August 28, 2001 - 2:51am MDT (on board TWA 372 bound for St. Louis)
Just finished filling in the blanks. It was nice not opening the laptop to much for the past week. It's one of the first time's I have actually been on a vacation. I dialed in over the weekend and picked up a bunch of email. Glanced through them and responded to the really urgent messages. The rest will just have to wait for me to get back. I still have to sort out my desk on Wednesday. I moved just before I left on vacation. My desk was not even in the right configuration. They were going to change it later in the day but I had to get out of there since I was flying out. It will be good to be back. I miss Tiffany. I got an email from Jyoti that she was well. Jyoti had been over a few times to see her and spent some time with her. Guess I will see if I can get a little sleep. Should try to remember to pack something warm on flights. This window seat gets cold on these night trips. And they have no blankets left. Had the same problem on the flight from St. Louis to Portland. At least I have no one in the seat next to me. Can get a little more comfortable.
Tuesday, August 28, 2001 - 1:20am PDT (on board TWA 372 bound for St. Louis)
I just left Portland a little bit ago. Had a great time there. Really miss being in Portland but now it is time to get back to work and get things going back in New Jersey. Vacation is over. I have to move in a few weeks and need to get everything packed and ready. Judy was great. Really miss her and going to hockey during the season. Here is a break down on my fun.
Monday, August 27, 2001 (Portland)
Just chilled at Judy's. Talked with a few people on the phone and said goodbye. Did laundry and watched some movies. It was great just being able to relax before heading back east.
Sunday, August 26, 2001 (Eugene, Oregon)
We had the victory brunch. It was a really nice spread. For only $12 we got our little tickets and went next door to the main Sunday Brunch that the restaurant has going. It had everything and then some. Even a nice ice carving of a dolphin. Picked up extra step down pins for several people in New York that Milo knows. Got a list of people to give pins and programs to along with Milo's love. Drove back to Portland and dropped off my things at Judy's. Later that night, I went out to Silverado for my last night out on the town. Had a fun time. Ran into several people that I had not seen previously.
Saturday, August 25, 2001 (Eugene, Oregon)
The coronation was fun. Got to see and talk with many people that I know from around the Northwest. Also several people from around the country were in town for the event. Kevin was here from Boston. The Chicago boys showed up. Phillip and Trent from Minneapolis were fun to talk with. We swapped a few fun stories. Maureen from Rhode Island was there too. Her luggage did not make it from LA on Friday. She had to go back out to the airport later Friday night to collect it. Good thing they had another flight that same day. In the morning I went over to the Gateway Mall and saw Princess Diary. My niece had said that it was a neat movie and it was. I'm glad I took the time to see it.
Friday, August 24, 2001 (Eugene, Oregon)
Drove down to Eugene which is about 2 hours south of Portland. Got checked in and then got the directions for where the out-of-town show was going to be. The bar was an old McDonalds just off of the University of Oregon campus near the dorms where I used to live in the early 80's. Boy has the area changed.
Thursday, August 23, 2001 (Portland, Oregon)
Wednesday, August 22, 2001 (Portland, Oregon)
Both of these days I did nothing special. Went to the Lloyd Center Mall and generally ran around town. I talked with friends at Portland Cable Access and stayed with Judy. On Wednesday we had a rehearsal at the Embers for the Eugene Coronation coming up this weekend. I also got Amy to clean my teeth. The dentist recommended some work due to my receding gum line. Will need to finally find a Dentist in New Jersey now. On one of these days and went to the Chiropractor. I was supposed to go back to Dr. Beeson (Chiropractor) but something else kept getting in the way, so I never made it back to see him again.
Tuesday, August 21, 2001 (Portland, Oregon)
Went to the lab today. Talked with various people and was totally shocked by the changes at the lab. Everything has been moved around and changed. It is very strange to look out the back door and see no Bldg. B at all. It is just a parking lot. They are just finishing the building across the street where our parking used to be. It's a nice new three story office building. Also, the new Hwy 217 ramps from/to Interstate 5 have all been completed. They were just starting that project when I left. So much has changed.
Sunday, August 19, 2001 (Portland, Oregon)
Checked out of my hotel and took my stuff to Judy's. Mark came with me and we sat around and chatted until we needed to leave for an all age function in Vancouver. After attending the event, dropped Mark back off at his truck. Met him later down at Silverado.
Saturday, August 18, 2001 (Portland, Oregon)
The Portland Pageant was fun. I saw lots of people that I knew and had an opportunity to talk with many of them. Did a cute little number that several people wanted to get a copy of. I know all three people who won.
Saturday, August 18, 2001 - 10:30am PDT (Portland, Oregon)
Had a great time last night. Got over to Portland and we went out on a small bar tour. Then went over to Silverado and it was their 20th anniversary night. So I stayed and had a good time there. Meet up with Mark. He went down the street and entered some Jell-O wrestling thing. He was sore but had a good time to. Have to run some errand.
Wednesday, August 15, 2001 - 4:20PM PDT (Bend, Oregon)
Made it to Portland. The flight landed around 3:15am which was about 2 1/2 hours late. Got the car rental just fine. Hertz does have a 24 hour rental counter so I did not have to wait until 6am to pickup the car. Made it out of the airport and headed for Bend. Had a nice drive over. Was not a bad drive. Traffic was very light and I just flew down the road. Got into Mom's at about 7am. We chatted and I unpacked. We went to Breakfast and saw Grandma then headed back for a nap. Boy did I need the nap. Got up around 1pm and then headed out to do some shopping. Got some really great clothes at Fred Meyers. Boy do I miss Freddy's back in New York. They just do not have anything like it. One stop shopping is just not a concept they understand. Anyway, we picked up some food things and then came back to the house. I put away the groceries and then decided to update my web page. Mom indicated that she had problems getting into my web site the other day. I checked and my index file is smashed for some reason. So I need to redownload it. That should take care of it. Dad is in town at a Bus Rally just about 30 minutes away so plan to see him tonight or tomorrow. Then just chill. Temperature was 101 when we came out of the store but the humidity is only like 40%. Much nicer than the 85%+ humidity I have been living with in New York.
Wednesday, August 15, 2001 - 12:50am MDT (on board TWA flight 687 to Portland)
Well we made it out of St. Louis. Turned out our original Flight crew were stuck in Iowa with a right engine starter shaft that decided to shatter. After they got it repaired, they made it into St. Louis. We are now in the air and headed toward Portland. Not sure about car rental and stuff once I am there. Will have to wait and see.
Tuesday, August 14, 2001 - 11:30pm CDT (St. Louis Airport)
Well, I had no problems making the flight. I dashed from concourse D to concourse C in record time to find out only that we had no pilot. So, I am sitting in the airport waiting for a Pilot to show up. From what we know, the flight that had our Pilot on it is stuck somewhere. So, we have no pilot. They have called a standby at 10pm and he (or she) has 2 hours to be at the airport.
Tuesday, August 14, 2001 - 9:15pm CDT (on board TWA flight 25 to St. Louis)
Finished filling in the weekend activities update. Glad to be on my way back to Oregon for a few weeks. Tiffany I know is in good hands. Had an opportunity to talk with Julie a bit before I left. Did not see Jyoti today. Both of them are going to be taking care of Tiffany while I am gone. Also gave Julie the Vets number and both my Mom and Dad's number in case of emergency. Tom (Doorman from the Apartment) picked me up and delivered me to Newark. Was there in plenty of time for the flight so I read a magazine and chatted with the TWA people when they were not busy.
Tuesday, August 14, 2001 - 8:31pm CDT (on board TWA flight 25 to St. Louis)
Well I made it out of Newark. The flight inbound was running late which put us behind. Nothing like yesterday according to the nice people at the TWA gate I was talking with. Storms in the area made air travel Monday just a mess. This morning they cleared the backlog and were doing fine until this light storm came through. We got out of the gate about 20 minutes late and then had to sit on the taxiway for the flights in front of us. They just announced that our expected touch down in St. Louis will be at 10:10 Central Time. <snicker> My connecting flight is scheduled to start boarding at 10:05 so I should be able to get right to it. Oh, and the nice people at the gate I was talking about. They bumped me to First Class because I was so nice. Thus, I am at the front of the plane and will be one of the first off of it. Today was fun. I had compliance training from 11 to 12 and then left shortly after that. My new cube is a disaster but, I will deal with that when I get back. The movers were there and moved Bob and I to our new area. Had bunches of things on the morning operations call because of multiple problems from Monday. Oh well. I was packed and mostly ready to go. Tiffany was happy to see me. I got home, double checked a few things. Sat down and sorted Quarters for Uncle Gene. Then checked everything else off of my list. Called the Electric company and cable company to make arrangements for my apartment move in mid-September. Already did the phone. So, I am set for that move. Just need to pack everything when I get back and then get the dollies and moving things.
Monday, August 13, 2001
Lots of work. We had several related and unrelated system problems that caused a ripple effect on the day. What a mess we had. It was a good thing that it was Monday. If it had been any other day, we would have been in deep do do. Got home and packed almost everything. Did laundry too. In the afternoon, dashed over to Manhattan to check out a fabric sale that was going on at Jeffery's friends. They are going out of business so lots of "great" deals. We got the fabric that we needed for my Henry VIII outfit that he is making for me. Had a fun time just going through the place. Especially liked the basement part even though it was a wreak. Later after dropping off a few friends, we had dinner. Got instructions on what I needed to do to finish off my outfit for the Eugene Coronation which is next weekend.
Sunday, August 12, 2001
After victory brunch, meet the bride and groom and several of the guests from the reception in the lobby. Even the bride's father came up to me and chatted for a bit. He wanted to know if I was able to steer my way home last night ok? I was since I no longer drink alcohol. So, then he and I talked about that for a few. Debbie (bride) came over and wanted to tell me how much fun they had. Turns out that the incoming Baron and Baroness have invited them back next year to celebrate their anniversary. They just live a few miles away and indicated that they will be there. This I have to see. So I am planning on heading back to Vermont next year. Some of the reception guests were from Massachusetts and Connecticut. They were able to pickup information about those Courts there. We will see if they decide to come out and party with us in those cities too. Drove back and did rather well until I got to the Palisades. The Palisades to the George Washington Bridge (GWB) was stacked up. Finally made it home around 10:30pm that night. Tiffany was sure glad to see me.
Saturday, August 11, 2001
Got up early and took a tour of the BEN AND JERRY'S ICE CREAM factory. Had a great time. This was the original plant and still makes about 25% of all pints you see in the stores. The other two newer factories elsewhere makes the remaining 75%. Picked up a few T-shirts as gifts for my trip back to Portland on Tuesday. Spent the rest of the day getting ready for the ball Saturday night. The Adornment was great. (It's not a coronation because Vermont is a new group and are a Barony and not a full fledge court). It was a fun small event but loads of fun. The other ballroom had a wedding going on. During the reception, they started coming over to our ballroom and checking out the drag queens. The bride (Debbie) asked me if she could have a picture with her and me. Turns out she loves fish and I had this fun costume on that had these big plastic fish sew onto a fish net draped like a sash. For a hat, I had a big plastic ship's wheel on a ball cap. It was fun. Anyway, Debbie and I got talking. Turns out she is a registered nurse so we talked medical for a bit. Then we talked about the non-profit work that the Court system does and we talked about what was going on. During the evening, many from the reception came over for a look at the elaborate outfits some people had on. Several of us were in the back explaining various things to anyone with questions. Just goes to prove how "inclusive" we can be. Later, the bride and groom (Kevin) were blessed by the outgoing Baroness of Vermont. After the we were done, my friend Coco from NYC and Miranda Rights from Connecticut, went over to the reception and performed for the guests. The guest were floored. They loved it.
Friday, August 10, 2001 (pm)
The ride up to Burlington, Vermont was great. Was a bit early still to check in so went over to the local mall and checked out the area. Had a good time. The show that night was nothing great but the dinner was excellent. We left the show and went to the Vermont Culinary School (something like that) where they train people how to be chefs. We walked up and the wait time was 1 hour. My friend Jeffery chatted with the guy and the next thing we knew, we were being seated upstairs. Jeffery just told him we were in town from NYC and this and that and poof. We had a table. I had the free range chicken with mashed potatoes and it was out of this world.
Friday, August 10, 2001 - 5:10am EDT
Just getting ready to head out for Vermont soon. Yesterday, Newark airport recorded and all time high of 105 degrees. This breaks there previous high of 103 set back in the 40's. Note, this was not their high for the day. This was their ALL TIME, EVER and EVER recorded high. Now that is high. Long Island Electric issued a stage 1 power alert. Weather people change our HEAT ADVISORY to a EXCESSIVE HEAT ALERT as we survived our fifth day over 90 degree heat. Power grid was reduced 5% in voltage to cut back on power. Water main break outside the apartment has been totally fixed so air was back on and the apartment stayed nice and cool. Tiffany says hello to everyone. Driving into Brooklyn to pickup my friend Ashley who is ridding up to Vermont with me. Want to get out of the City by 7am and then we will be going reverse to traffic so roads should be fine. Had a great time yesterday helping my mom find some information on the web. She was really pleased that she called me and asked for help. I found just what she was looking for. Will have to teach her a few of my internet tricks when I am in Portland next week. I get back Sunday and then have to do laundry and repack for Portland. Saturday we might visit the Tom & Jerry's Ice Cream Factory and later the Vermont Teddy Bear Factory. So that should be a blast. Oh, I'm actually headed for BURLINGTON, VERMONT. Look it up. We will be headed north on Interstate 87 in case you have a US map to look at. Got to finish packing last minute items. Stay cool this weekend.
Wednesday, August 8, 2001 - 8:30am EDT
HOT, HUMID and HAZY
That is what the forecast has been like. It cooled off to a nice 78 degree's last night. Now it's already 91 in Central Park. Newark Airport has broken heat records for 2 days in a row now and is expected to break another one today. With us being over 90 degree's for more than 3 days, this is officially now a heat wave. To top it off, the water main in front of my complex broke yesterday. No water and no air conditioning until around 5pm. This weather is really a killer. I have been packing my cube here at work and trying to tie up all of the loose ends on current projects. I'm off on Friday. Headed to Vermont. Then back on Monday. Move to new office space on Tuesday. Then fly out of Newark Tuesday night for Portland. Oh boy. Somewhere in there I need to do laundry and pack. Tiffany has been sticking to me like glue. I think she knows that I am leaving for a few weeks. AH, work calls.
Monday, August 6, 2001 - 11:00am EDT
What a start to the week. We have a network outage when I walk through the door. The entire 2nd floor of the new administration building was out. So that took several hours to sort out. Then the weather is just horrible. With the humidity so high, it is just down right bad. This entire week is going to be a hot one. It might cool off to the 70's at night and then is supposed to be in the 90's for the entire week. Humidity was around 85% this morning. It really makes me slow down. It's just so hard to do ANYTHING. Oh well, got a few things that I have to do. Later.
Saturday, August 4, 2001 - 10:30pm EDT
Since it is late, I'm going to have to keep this update short. Currently I am peeling on my stomach. Had a wicked time on Fire Island last weekend but I got a bit to much sun on my tummy. Everything else was ok, but I was in the pool and did not put anything on me until it was to late. We had a great time, raised close to $2,000 at the annual Monarchs Fight Aids benefit at the Ice Palace in Cherry Grove, Fire Island. My friend, Suzanne from Portland came out for the event. Helped her around town on Monday then took her to the airport on Tuesday morning. We were staying up in The Pines which is the other gay community next to Cherry Grove.
Got back to work on Wednesday and have been real busy. This next week on Friday (10th) I drive to Vermont with two friends for Vermont's ball and then will drive back on Sunday. It's a 7 hour trip so that should be fun. The scenery should be excellent. I'm back at work then on Monday and Tuesday but Tuesday night I fly out to Portland. So, it is going to be a busy month of August.
