LOG UPDATE FOR JULY 2002
Tuesday, July 30, 2002 6:00pm
What a hot day. It was 83 degrees already at 6:30am this morning when I was going to work. Had a dentist appointment today. He checked out my teeth and I have to have minor oral gum surgery on the 13th. I'm having a bit of gum problems around where my root canal was. Just got back from the pool. I worked out on the bike for about 20 minutes and then took a dip in the pool to cool off. The humidity is supposed to lift but it will still be hot. I can handle the hot but it's the wet hot that is so hard. Anyway, made arrangements for my trip to Minneapolis at the end of October and then got the ok on my vacation back to Oregon in early December. Also got my next University of Phoenix class scheduled too. Tiffany wants some attention, so I need to go.

Got home from the island early today. Took our friend Suzanne from Portland to the airport. She was out for our annual Monarchs Fight Aids benefit on Fire Island this weekend. Had a great time talking with her. Suzanne and I have known each other for some 15 years. The show was great. I worked the door for the event. Got to talk with lots of interesting people. Some other friends of ours also drove in from Connecticut and attended the show. A good time was had by all. Now I am doing laundry and just working around the house.

Just got some email from my friend The Lovely Suzanne from Portland. She is coming to New York to host a benefit show on the island this weekend. I'm going to pick her up and deliver her to her hotel room on Thursday. Looking forward to talking with her about Portland. Looking forward to the show too. Tonight is the annual Christmas in July show at The Web. That should be fun. Got tons of work. Later.

Deposited Edward at the Newark airport and then headed for work. Talked to him when he got to Seattle. He had a nice flight sitting next to two young girls that he talked with during the entire flight. There older brother and parent were in the next seat behind him. He said it was a fun flight. It was great having him here for the week. He had fun, I had fun, we all had fun. Talked with our friend David in Washington D.C.. He wanted to tell me how much fun he and Bobby (his partner) had running around D.C. with Edward and I. He invited me back down to stay with them and do some touristy things.

Just relaxing on the island right now. It is raining lightly outside. Was a great day. Edward and I walked along the beach several times, then he jumped in and played in the surf. He flew in last week and we went to Washington, DC last weekend to pick up some things from his ex- and to sightsee with some friends of ours. David and Bobby showed us around and we had a great time spending the day with them. We went to the Holocaust Memorial and the Air & Space Museum. Edward has been to NYC before so he took care of himself on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday as I worked. Then we headed to the island on Thursday. It's Casino night tomorrow night. The Cherry Grove Arts Project does a fundraiser each year that I understand is a real "don't miss it" kind of event. Should be fun. Other than that, we are just kicking and relaxing.

We are once again in a black out. This is like the 7th one now. The first was about 9pm last night when we were about 3 numbers away from finishing the first performance. At 10pm we finished the show by flashlights loaned to us from the fire department and a boom box. The second show started at 11pm also by flashlight. We got power back around 11:30pm and went on for a bit. Then lost power again and finished with flashlights around 1am. During the closing night cast party, the lights came back on. Someone from the fire department said that the power authority had lost one of their major under-bay lines. They had gone to Ocean Beach (a town west of here on the island), started their secondary substation and then went to The Pines (just east of here) and started their substation. Earlier I heard someone say they were doing rolling blackouts because they did not have enough juice using the secondary lines for everyone. It seems like it's on for an hour then off for an hour. We will see if at 3pm it comes back on. Half the population is leaving today, so they should have enough during the week for everyone while they figure out what happened and see about getting it repaired.
Saturday, July 6th, 12:20pm
Ok, finished with this for now. The weather is so much better than it was. A cool breeze came in last night and the humidity has really dropped. It's about 80 now and feels just great. Not a cloud in the sky. Looking forward to just kicking back and relaxing. Have to work Monday, so will be taking a late boat Sunday back into the city.
Saturday, July 6th, 11:50am
Just relaxing right now. Thought I would fire up the computer and do a little update. Have had a great week so far so might as well fill you in. Had a 7 and 10pm show last night. We did not get out of there until after midnight. The second show, the audience was much more into the performance. I'm doing lights for the show. Having a great time with Alyson (sound) up in the booth. We have two follow spot people as well. Different spot people this weekend than last weekend. Last weekend we had two shows too. Tonight is closing night so they are have a cast party afterwards that I am invited to. That should be interesting meeting people and just relaxing.
Here is a bit of what else has been going on.

Had to work this morning. Took the 11:30pm boat back and got home and crashed about 1:30am. Tiffany was sure happy to have me home. Took the film from Thursday over to the 1 hour developer at 7am when they opened and then went to work. Work was busy. Gee, what else is new these days. All of the managers were gone. Even the other one that was supposed to be on holiday coverage called out sick. So it was me and the gang. Lots of operational issues to sort out and deal with. A few crisis issues from Wednesday had to be prepared for Monday when everyone is back. Took off at 1pm after everything had calmed down, picked up the developed pictures and headed back for the island. The traffic was great. I was afraid of it being bad but zoomed right on through everything. It takes about 1 and 1/2 hours from Hackensack to Sayville where the ferry terminal is. Then, you need to get in the queue and wait for the next boat. I stopped off at the Stop & Shop (a food store) and bought a few things. Then came over to the terminal, parked and waited only about 10 minutes before they boarded the 3:30pm boat. I'm getting much better at timing my trips.

Oh what a great day. The annual Invasion of the Pines happened today. For some 27 years the people of Cherry Grove have invaded the neighbor community of The Pines. Everyone gets dressed up in drag, (three of us went at 1880 style bathing beauties) parades through town, gets interviewed for the archives and then boards the boat. The boat takes everyone out into the bay (because of the channel, otherwise the bay is only about 5 feet deep) and then turns toward The Pines. The Pines is the community just east of where we are and is served by the same ferry service. Everyone is on deck (about 250 I was told this year), waving and cheering as we pull into the dock. The Pines has a little harbor and it is filled with mostly shirtless men yelling and screaming. I have pictures that I will get scanned and uploaded soon. Then, one by one, everyone comes off of the boat and is introduced to the crowd. The press is there taking pictures. It is really a show. Everyone heads into the bars where they are all served free drinks (part of the tradition). About an hour later, the boat loads back up and we head back to the Grove.

Got out of work late and headed to the island. Good thing I was packed already and left right from work. Got to the train station in Sayville just about 10 minutes before my friends arrived (I was meeting them). We drove to the local grocery store and shopped before getting on the ferry. Later, walked along the beach at low tide all the way east to The Pines. It was really nice since the weather has been so hot and humid. It's supposed to be about the same for the 4th and then lighten up.
