Update for May 2004
Thursday, May 20, 2004 6:40am EDT
Had a very nice evening. Missed Fire Academy but attended a dinner honoring people with 20, 25, 30 and 35 years of service to the laboratory. This is my 20th year with the company and I received a nice gift and some nice words from my boss Maureen. The food was nice and the company was great too. Hey, only 14 days until the 3rd Harry Potter movies comes out. 2 weeks from tonight I'll be there at the midnight opening. Check out the trailer.

Nice early class tonight. Ladders lecture. Really boring stuff but we have three more nights of ladders practical so I am sure that will not be so early. They did warn us that we will be late Thursday night. Better make sure I am packed for the island then for Friday morning. Jeffrey wants to get out there early and I would too so that I can relax. I am going to miss Search (Hot) tomorrow because of an awards presentation at work. They would pick a Wednesday. Oh well. It is my 20th anniversary with Quest Diagnostics and I guess they really do a nice job. Both of my bosses will be there and lots of the brass that I know. So it is rather important that I go. Can't figure out if I am going to wear a tux or just business casual. Suspect it will be hot so I'll just opt for the business casual wear.

Had a fun weekend on the island. Have some film I need to get developed around here somewhere. It was cold on Friday but was nice, dry and very warm on Saturday and Sunday. The mandatory Fire Department meeting went well on Saturday morning. I was all dressed up in my Fire Department uniform. Got things taken care of and then met up with the Training officer to do some additional training on our MSA self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). Had to be at work around 2am this morning. So I was very tired. We did a system conversion. Moved all of the software from one machine over to a new, faster, better, etc. computer system. Had to do all of the testing and making sure everything was ok. Got home for a conference call at 9am and then slept. Around 2pm, got up and headed out to a Fire Store up North. Had a nice time there. Bought a new pair of boots for my fire gear. Also got some gloves. Now back home to relax before heading to the Fire Academy around 6:30pm.

Man am I tired right now. I was up until 2:30am getting ready to head out to the island. Now I am up, showered and just about to dress and lug everything out to the car. Still have to change the cat box. Will type more from the island but not sure if phone will be in so I may not have connectivity out there. Have a good weekend everyone.

Ed bought me bagels and not beagles. Oh well. Spell checker for some reason did not figure out that I meant what I meant and not what I meant. Nice easy day today. Just sat at Starbucks and did some reading. Talked with friends and then came home and watched some television. Got a busy schedule this week. I'm up at the fire academy Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday this week.

Got up very early this morning and drove to the island. Had a nice hose house drill out by the ocean. A picture was taken of me headed back to the fire house with some faulty 1 1/2" hose. It was leaking and will be retired from service. Got my new uniform shirt from the department president and did some drilling on our SCBA air units with the chief. After walking around and checking out a friends new house, I headed back off island. Took a nap after I got back and then attended a Hasbrouck Heights Fire Department open house for the public. Had a nice time talking with everyone there and had an opportunity to meet some new people from the community.

Ok, now I guess I will head home. Have been talking with different friends here and just chilling. Got a few things to do at home before I head out to the island in the early morning. Think I will head out of here around 6am to get the 8 something boat. I need to be on the island for a 9am hose house drill and then talking with several people after the drill. Just finished going over the reading for next week again. Short chapter for this week. All on self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). Bergen county uses SCOTT packs while we have MSA on my department. I am hoping to borrow a MSA pack from CGFD for training. That is one thing I need to check while out there tomorrow. Got birthday greetings from grandma, my Aunt & Uncle, my sister, and my Dad & step mom. They are on my door at my apartment. I have not talked with my neighbor recently but last time she told me how much she enjoyed my cards hanging on my door. So I always put them out there for a few weeks. Also got a card from the gang at the UPS Store where my mailbox is. We chat everyday when I go in for a few minutes. They love me. Then again, who would not.
Friday, May 7, 2004 6:35pm EDT HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME !!!
So far it has been a nice birthday. Mom and Dad called to wish me a Happy, Happy. Ed brought in bagels for breakfast and everyone wished me a happy birthday at work. Work went well. Lots of usual things. My friend Stephen and I went out last night. Tonight just relaxing and typing at Starbucks right now. Talking to Dennis right now about his school. A parent complained about him today so he is a bit upset. One kid is telling lies again. What a piece of do do. Think I will head back to home later and just relax. I have a movie or two at home that I would like to watch.

Well I think I will leave soon and head home. Worked on 7 of my 9 chapters that I need to review for my mid-term in 4 weeks. Feel rather good about them. Figured out just where I need to spend more time on my studies. Here are the results.
96% Firefighter Orientation & Safety
78% Fire Behavior
88% Firefighter Personal Protective Equipment
67% Ropes & Knots
84% Forcible Entry
100% Fire Detection, Alarm & Suppression Systems
76% Fire Prevention & Public Fire Education
I still have Building Construction and Rescue & Extrication chapters to review. Both classes are this week so I'm a bit ahead right now. Passing is 70% so I am sitting in rather a good situation with 4 weeks to go until the mid-term.

at Starbucks doing some study guide work on Fire School. Went out to the
island yesterday and had fun basically watching them do a hose house
drill. I can't do to much until after I pass my official physical which
will be Memorial Day weekend. Might get a waiver from my physician this
week which will do. Especially since my doctor says my blood pressure is
down and is MUCH better than it was. I think it was 100/84. It used
to be 140/100 when I first started going to him. So he feels very good
about my being a firefighter now. Took the review for chapter 1, 2 and 19
so far. Still have several more to go. I have school tomorrow.
This week's lectures are 11 - Building Collapse and 12 - Rescue &
Extrication. Then next week is SCBA (Self Contained Breathing Apparatus)
for 2 weeks and then my mid-term on May 24th. Gosh time is flying by
rather quickly. I'm on the island every weekend starting in 2 weeks on the
14th. And I am going on on Saturday for drills right
