Update for January 2005

Saturday, January 29, 2005 10:15am EST

Just kicking back waiting for the phone repair man.  I still have noise on my phone line.  Had a nice Tsunami Relief event in the city last night.  Stayed until about 2am.  So just got up and showered.  Lots of reading to do today.  Weather is finally getting a bit warmer.  Thursday morning it was about 4 degrees and warmed up to a bone chilling 16.  Friday was better, it actually got above 20 and today it's supposed to be above freezing.  This next week it is more moderate.  Those 30's sure fell a lot better than those teens.

Thursday, January 27, 2005 7:00am EST

Just got home from the gym.  Had my fitness evaluation this morning.  Something's good, lot of things bad.  Vincent gave me some ideas on how to improve and keep things going in the right direction.  Then again, he gave me a few ideas on how to turn things around and point them in the right direction.  Only time will tell.  I MUST keep my resolve of going to the gym 3-4 times a week.  That is going to be the hardest part of the whole thing.  He did talk to me more about a food plan that will help me lose weight and with working out, keep it off.  So that is encouraging.  Now I just have to do it.  My fire class on Tuesday was great.  Right now we are starting off with the Incident Command (Management) System for two classes.  Then into lots of other things.  Here is a break down.

IMS (Incident Management System) 200 level

Master Streams, Water Supply and Hand Lines

Flammable Liquids and Foam

Interior Attack

Confined Space & Trenches

Vehicle Extrication

Cause & Origin / Evidence Protection

Pre-planning & Communications

Fast Team / Two In, Two Out

Ladders & High Rises

Equipment Maintenance & Hose Testing

Final Exam

Practical Evaluation

I will finish in mid April.  I have a few classes that I will need to figure out how to make up.  So might have to switch over to the day class for a few make-ups.

Wednesday, January 26, 2005 8:00am EST

Wow, what a busy day yesterday.  I still think I could sleep some more.  Went to the gym this morning at 5:30am and had a fitness review.  Worked out and now am home about to jump into the shower.  Very busy with lots of little "nit" things at work going on.  Need to figure out a way to be more organized with all the little projects going on.  Fire School was fun last night.  Got the new book and all of the material.  Lots of reading to do for that class.  More later. Oh, everyone was jealous that I missed the snow storm.  giggle

Tuesday, January 25, 2005 2:00am EST (Home)

Made it home just fine.  My guess was rather close.  Tiffany was very glad to see me.  Lots of snow on the car but I was able to get it unburied and out.  About a foot of snow on the car.  Roads were fine, just took it easy on the way home.  Got to get some sleep.

Monday, January 24, 2005 11:00pm EST (40 minutes out of Newark International)

Getting ready to start our decent into Newark.  Oh, finished the minutes for the Board of Director's meeting from the other week.  I can now send those off to the other board members for comments when I get home.  That was one of the major items I had on my to do list this weekend.  The pilot told us it was cold in Newark.  Brought my coat, that is for sure.  Hey, it was cold when I left Newark on Friday.  Oh well.  Time to shut down.

Monday, January 24, 2005 10:15pm EST (in route to Newark International)

Talked with Mom briefly while I was on the ground in Houston.  The flight over from Palm Springs was nice and uneventful.  Had a skinny mocha while I was there and had the opportunity to upload some web things and download some email while I was there.  But since it was an open network connection I could not upload any email.  So my email that I sent will be sent when I get home.  Still curious what my car is going to look like when I get to Newark.  Hopefully it is not to buried.  Watching Taxi right now on the plane.  Looks interesting.  Never saw it in the theatre when it was out.  Think I will get it through my Netflix some time.  Think I will go into work a bit late on Tuesday.  I think I told them I would not be getting back until late Monday.  Schedule: Tuesday fire school.  Wednesday study.  Thursday fire school.  Friday Tsunami Relief benefit in the city.  So going to be rather busy this next week.

Monday, January 24, 2005 6:20pm CST (Houston-Bush International Airport)

Landed a bit early and had a few minutes.  The President's Club has a fair signal just outside the door.  They actually have seats set up here for people to use.  Another person was here with his laptop so I just sat down and got into the internet.  Got to get on down to my gate to make sure everything is ok.  They should be boarding in about 10 minutes.

Monday, January 24, 2005 1:15pm PST (20,000' and climbing out of Palm Springs)

Looks like we got out of there a bit late.  But hopefully they will make it up in the air.  We were #3 to take off and then we sat for several landings before they allowed us to take off.  Going to play my computer game a bit and then just enjoy the trip.

Monday, January 24, 2005 11:40am PST (Palm Springs International Airport)

Made it to the airport.  My plane just arrived from Houston.  So I guess it just jumps back and forth all day.  We do not board for another half-hour so just got a drink and now have settled down to type for a bit.  Had a great time here.  Wish I could have stayed a bit longer but have lots of things to do back home.  I start Fire School again when I get back not to mention just getting back and trying to get my car out of the snow bank at the airport.  Dad and Connie dropped me off out front and I just sailed right through the bag check-in and security.  Just the way I like it.  Yesterday evening was nice.  We just hung around the bus.  I got to go take another swim and went into the spa.  An outdoor pool and spa, that was really nice.  Got some email from friends back east that are upset that I am here enjoying myself in 75 degree weather while they are freezing in 10-20 degree weather and 1 1/2 feet of snow.  I called the apartment complex where I live and asked them to clear the snow from my space.  I'll have to drop them off some money on Tuesday.  Stephen said the roads were ok.  Lots of clear ice on the pavement so I will just need to take my time and drive carefully.  Expect to be home around 2am.  Ran around the park and looked at several other coaches and lots.  Meet a bunch of dad's friends and talked with them.  Looking forward to seeing Tiffany and just getting back into the swing of things at home.  But I am sure luck to have missed the storm back east.  giggle.

Sunday, January 23, 2005 5:30pm PST (Palm Springs, CA)
We went up the Palm Springs Tram today.  Up some 8,000 feet.  It is a huge National Park up there.  Kids were bringing their sleds and playing in the snow.  Hey, it's 80 degrees down in Palm Springs.  Dick Wright and Jeanie just arrived to visit. We had dinner at this Chinese restaurant down town.

Sunday, January 23, 2005 8:30am PST (Palm Springs, CA)

Having a great time here in Palm Springs.  Watching the news back home and it is really cold there and lots of snow.  So I am really enjoying not being back in the foot and a half of snow.  But I have to go back on Monday and dig out my car at the airport.  Oh well.  Boy is that going to be a drastic return to reality.  Nice pictures of Central Park on MSNBC right now.  Connie is making breakfast in the bus today.  It should warm up a bit on Monday and I do not fly in until late Monday.  Hopefully all of the flights will be back to normal.  Lots of the news on the TV right now are talking about the 3' of snow in Massachusetts.  Last night they had a Pig Roast in the main club house.  We are headed to some tram that takes you up on the mountain so that you can look out over Palm Springs.

Saturday, January 22, 2005 5:15pm PST (Palm Springs, CA)

Sitting at a Starbucks in Palm Springs with Connie right now.  Sorry I did not put another update in since I got here.  Have really been enjoying the weather here.  Especially when they are having a blizzard back home right now.  No broadband in the bus so just checking email from here.  Got to dash.

Friday, January 21, 2005 - 7:30am CST (50 minutes out from Houston, Texas onboard CO111)

The day started off rather early.  I really wanted to turn over and go back to sleep when the alarm went off this morning.  Tiffany was looking at me saying, "What on earth are you doing up at this time?".  She finally got up too and followed me around the apartment as I got ready.  The roads were dry but cold.  The temp was like 7 degrees at Newark.  They are expecting a major snow storm this weekend.  This is the second time I have managed to leave during a good amount of snow being dumped on us.  Can not remember how long my layover is in Houston but will figure it out when I get there.  Was over at Starbucks last night and just hung out with Steve. Last night we went to a big thank you dinner for a friend of his.  It was right after his second swearing in as the Sheriff of Passaic County.  I learned last night that unlike Bergen County, Passaic County Sheriff actually controls all of the police activities in the county.  In Bergen, the Sheriff only deals with the jail and the courthouse security.  The Bergen County Police (a different organization under the Freeholds) do policing in the county.  We have just made a turn so we must be getting ready to start our decent soon into Houston.  Oh, the whole Newark experience this time of getting off the ground was so much different than last time.  I parked, hoped on a shuttle bus.  Checked my bags at the skycap, walked right through security and then almost directly onto the plane.  The plane pulled out and taxied directly to the runway and took off.  No 15 planes stacked up waiting to get out.  It was SWEET !!!  The dinner last night was at a fancy banquet hall.  The upstairs held about 250 people (the room could seat about 400) and had a screen and projector with a camera on the podium downstairs.  The downstairs was packed with about 200 people.  Steve introduced me to the Sheriff and many other people.  His mom was there too.  She is the Controller for the Sheriff's department.

Tuesday, January 18, 2005 - 6:00pm EST

I am really glad that when I got my oil done a week or so ago, I had my antifreeze checked too.  It was needed so I had it changed back then.  Now it is -10 wind chill tonight and the temperature is supposed to dip into single digits here.  I still have to make it to Friday when I leave for Palm Springs for the weekend.  Just paying a few bills that came in and then I have a meeting at 7:30pm.  A friend of mine invited me to a Inauguration dinner on Wednesday for a friend of his who was just reelected as the Sheriff for Passaic County (that is the next county to the west of where I live).  So that should be interesting.  Got my certificates in the mail today for my Firefighter 1 class.

Tuesday, January 18, 2005 - 7:20am EST

Just got back from the gym and boy it is cold outside.  12 above right now.  Looking forward to flying out Friday to Palm Springs to see my dad.  Other than that, lots of the same going on.  I start fire school a week from today.  Should be interesting.  I am also working on a non-profit bulk mailing permit for the Imperial Court of New York.  Hope to hear something this week on our application.  We have a large mailing going out in two weeks for our ball April 2nd.  Got to get changed and to work.

Thursday, January 13, 2005 - 4:30pm EST

Well, I sure had a bomb shell of a morning.  Finally got some action on my application to be on the Hasbrouck Heights Fire Department.  The Captain from the Police department called me.  We had spoken back in March 2004 concerning my application.  He believed that I had verbally withdrew my application and shelved the application.  While I was under the impression that I had to send them a written request to withdraw my application.  So I considered it still pending but they considered it withdrawn.  Ok, so reapply.  But I have a problem with my record.  Boy did I not know how bad of record I had according to them.  And now I understand why.  The Captain informed me that the name search from Oregon came up with an Assault charge, a burglary charge and several other items all from 1994-1997 I think it was.  I was at work and not taking very good notes because of my state of shock.  My only actual charge from 1986 was not included in the records.  Someone has duped me and used my name, date of birth and address when being arrested multiple times in Portland.  So now I am in the process of contacting a criminal attorney in Portland to investigate and see what needs to be done to clear all of this up.  Wow.  Stay tuned as this drama unfolds.

Monday, January 10, 2005 - 6:20pm EST

Went to pick up my film the other day and it was blank as well.  Took the current film out of the camera and clicked it several times.  Turns out that the shutter is broken.  Another reason for me to buy a digital camera finally.  Chucked that camera into the trash bin.  Poor little thing.  But it gave me some excellent pictures over the year.  Sure there is lots else going on but want to shut down and get over to Starbucks.  Dropped my current class so that I could concentrate on Fire School which starts Tuesday, January 25th.  That should be intense.   More on all of that later.  Mom got home from her trip safe and sound.  Now they are snowed in but at least they made it home.  Dad reports rain in Palm Springs.

Monday, January 3, 2005 - 6:00pm EST

Very busy day today at work.  I took off work early and went to the Administration of the Oath of Office to Leo P. McGuire, Bergen County Sheriff.  Acting Governor Richard Codey administered the Oath to our new Sheriff.  Also there were our Senior Senator Jon Corzine and Congressman Steve Rothman.  I had an opportunity to speak with our state General Assemblyman from my district and several other people that I know.  The ceremony was on the steps of the Bergen County Courthouse.  Then we went inside to the Great Hall where they served up lots of food.

Sunday, January 2, 2005 - 1:15pm EST

Had a nice quiet New Year's.  We closed the Hasbrouck Heights Starbucks at 10pm and then went over to another Starbucks where a friend of ours was working.  We staying until about 11pm and then went over to a friends house.  We watched the ball drop on TV and then the four of us played cards.  Today I went to the gym and then went to the store.  I took down the Christmas lights and laundry is currently in the dryer.  Yesterday I attended the swearing in ceremony of the new council persons in Hasbrouck Heights.  Both of them I know.  Oh, an I was elected the Vice President of the Hasbrouck Heights Democratic Club last week for this coming year.  Lots going on.
